Een jaar of een dag

Gezien vanuit een hoogte van duizend mijl
ziet de Aarde er eender uit als tevoren. / Hoe komt 't dat wij
sneller dan de dag kunnen vliegen / maar dat wij de dingen
die we nodig hebben niet kunnen vinden?
"Jongeman," zei de oude man,
"laat de jongeling in jouw hart met rust.
 We kunnen binnen een jaar of een dag dood zijn
wanneer de duivel op de proef wordt gesteld.
Proef, proef, PROEF!"*
De scheppingsdag was ons fijnste uur
't is iets dat wij dienen te verdedigen.
Maar vanaf het eerst daglicht is 't zo misbruikt
dat er uiteindelijk geen roem uit kan voortkomen.
"Jongeman," riep de oude man, "in leven blijven
houdt een overwinning in, / en wanneer jij zo weinig bezorgd bent voor de wereld waarin wij leven,
waarom en met wat wil je overleven?
"Kunnen wij niet proberen het verleden, -- haar lessen / vast genesteld in ons gemoed -- voorbij laten gaan.
Laat ons, voor de duisternis komt,
onze kinderen een wereld nalaten
vol van anderssoortig licht.
"Zij moeten elkaar in waarheid ontmoeten,
en met liefde moet hun harten kloppen, / en zij moeten
de problemen van onze tijd met geduld oplossen.
Het zou niet zo moeilijk te doen zijn,
het hangt alleen van mij en jou af.
Laat ons geen misdadig leven nalaten."

We may all be dead in a year or a day

The day of creation was our finest hour
It's something we ought to defend
But it's been so abused since the first day of light
That no glory can come in the end

"There is victory in staying alive
And if you care so little for the world we're in
Why and what do you want to survive?"

Can't we try to let the past go by
With its lessons firmly settle in our minds
To our children one by one
And before the darkness comes
Let us leave a world full of light
Of a different kind

In truth they should meet
And with love their hearts should beat
And with patience solve the problems of our time
It wouldn't be so hard to do
It's only up to me and you
Let us not bequeath a life that is a crime
