Jacques Brel - Les jardins du casino English translation lyrics

The casino gardens

The musicians sport their mustaches
and their violins and their saxophones,
and the polka gets on its way
in the casino gardens,
where old bags and younger ones
aroused according to their seniority
loiter and chat around
among unhurried gentlemen.
Some emaciated young men
still prone to confuse
erotism and gymnastics
may also be seen passing by.
All this puts up a Chinese wall
between our poor friend Pierrot
and his fleeting Columbine1
in the casino gardens.

The musicians mustaches frisk briskly,
as do their violins and saxophones,
as the polka is leading the gait
of the casino's young star.
Some bloated couples
are dancing like meat loaves2
with sunflower languidness
in front of the old chatterboxes.
A colonel posing as a civilian
is paying his convoluted respects
to phoney duchesses, with much
hand kissing and butt sniffing3.
All this, as you can guess,
does no good to our poor Pierrot
seeking his fleeting Columbine
in the casino gardens.

And then the night falls in blotches,
the musicians put away their saxophones
and their violins and their mustaches.
In the casino gardens,
the young ladies go back to the lairs
without this young or widowed man
who should have offered them the litter
where they could have laid their egg.
The old gentlemen are going home
to meet again the yellowed memory
of their Madame Bovary4
they rekindle the best they can.
And remains nothing but
the poor Pierrot's pearly soul
grieving for his fleeting Columbine
in the casino's gardens.

1. symbolic characters from the Italian Commedia dell'Arte.
Very well known in France too, especially Pierrot2. "escalope" would be "scallop". I'm not familiar with the term used in this context, maybe that's some slang that went out of fashion3. the usual expression is "rond de jambe" (doing circular movements with the legs), meaning convoluted marks of respect. Here it says "buttock" instead of "leg". Hopefully my choice does not sound too far off4. main character of the eponymous novel by Gustave Flaubert.
Difficult to explain what this image evokes in a few words.
Somewhat akin to Cathy in Wuthering Heights, maybe?

Pleurant fugace Colombine
Dans les jardins du casino
Du casino
