Geschreven in 1983 door frontman Ric Ocasek voor het album Heartbeat City en in 1984 uitgebracht. Het werd de grootste internationale hit van The Cars. Nochtans zong Ric Ocasek niet zelf, maar wel bassist Benjamin Orr. Toen die stierf in 2000 werd dit nummer op zijn herdenking gespeeld bij de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. De videoclip die gemaakt werd voor het nummer werd geregisseerd door Timothy Hutton die in 1980 als jongste acteur ooit de Academy Award won als beste mannelijke bijrol voor zijn rol in Ordinary People.
Drive werd gebruikt als achtergrondmuziek op Live Aid om beelden te tonen uit Ethiopië. In de clip is de toen 19-jarige model en actrice Paulina Porizkova te zien. Tijdens die opnames leerden zij Cars frontman Ric Ocasek kennen. In 1989 trouwde het koppel.
