Elton John en Bernie Taupin schreven dit nummer origineel in 1973 voor het album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road dat een jaar later zou uitkomen. Het nummer is een ode aan Marilyn Monroe, die 11 jaar eerder overleed. Al kan het ook over andere artiesten gaan die veel te jong gestorven zijn zoals James Dean, Jim Morrison en Janis Joplin. De titel komt trouwens uit een tribute voor Janis Joplin, waar de woorden 'candle in the wind' genoemd worden. Het nummer werd net geen top 10 hit. In 1986 werd een live versie op single uitgebracht dat toch mooi op nr 5 geraakte. Maar het grote succes kwam in 1997. De tekst over Marilyn Monroe werd licht aangepast als ode aan de net overleden prinses Diana. Die versie werd wel een nr 1 hit en zelfs de meest verkochte single ooit, na White Christmas van Bing Crosby. Als respect voor haar overlijden, speelt hij die versie niet bij live optredens. De '97 versie bracht Elton John wel een Grammy Award op voor beste pop zanger.
