David Bowie schreef het nummer voor zijn album Scary Monsters (and super creeps) in 1980. Met de tekst verwijst hij nog eens naar Major Tom, het personage uit zijn hit Space Oddity. In het nummer zou de astronaut nu in de ruimte zijn en als een junkie rondzweven. Volgens fans een verwijzing naar de strijd van Bowie tegen zijn eigen drugsgebruik. De bijhorende videoclip, die Bowie zelf regisseerde, was in zijn tijd de duurste die er tot dan gemaakt werd. En nog steeds een iconische clip uit de 80's. In eigen land geraakte het nummer en het album op de 1e plaats.

Beaucoup d'erreurs dans les paroles en anglais puis mal traduit en francais! Bowie dit "wings", pas "wheels", et le traduire par "ailes", pas "roues", et ça doit lire "strung out in heaven, his high, hitting an all-time low."
Il faut dire "temps après temps je me dis (ou chaque fois je me dis), je restera sobre ce soir".
