Here Comes Our Proud Mayflower

Here comes our proud mayflower*,
and she won't be coming again for another long year.
Her little feet tread on, she was joyful
and wore a rose garland all around her hat,
She carried her father's staff in her hand
and with it she rode to the Land of Morning**.
The Land of Morning lay behind the door
and in front of it stood three jaunty pretty girls.
One was pristine, the other was small
and the third poured me a glass of cool wine.

Isn't she a proud mayflower?
And she won't be coming again for another long year.
And when that long year came to an end
beautiful Annie had to go into childbed.
Isn't she a proud mayflower?
And beautiful Annie is her name.

*Comparable to the English practice of choosing a May Queen, on the day of Pentecost in many Dutch places the most beautiful unwed girl would be chosen to be the "mayflower". (Pinksteren = Pentecost, pinksterblom = flower of Pentecost.)
**Morgenland, lit "Land of Morning" is often used to refer to the east, the direction in which the sun rises.

hier komt onze fiere pinksterblom

Hier komt onze fiere pinksterblom
Haar voetjes treden voort, zij was welgemoed
