Daar ging het schip The Diamond jagen. In 1830 kwamen de schepen The Diamond, Eliza Swan, The Resolution en nog 17 andere schepen vast te zitten in het ijs van Melville Bay. De schepen gingen verloren en vele zeelieden stierven.
Ewan MacCollwas de eerste die het lied op de plaat zette (1957).
Oh, the Diamond is a ship, me lads, for the Davis strait she's bound And the key it is all garnished wae Bonnie lassies round Captain Thompson gees the orders to sail the ocean wide Where the sun it never sets me, lads or darkness dims the sky All along the quays at Peterhead, the lassies stand around With their shawls all pulled about them, and their salt tears running down Oh, don't you weep my Bonnie lass though you be left behind For the rose will grow on Greenland's ice before we change your mind And it's cheer up, my lads Let your hearts never fail For the Bonnie ship the Diamond Goes a-fishing for the whale Here's a health to the Resolution and likewise the Eliza Swan Here's a health to the Battler of Montroseand, the Diamond ship of fame We wear the trousers of the white and the jackets of the blue When we return to Peterhead we'll have sweethearts anew And it's cheer up, my lads Let your hearts never fail For the Bonnie ship the Diamond Goes a-fishing for the whale And it's cheer up, my lads Let your hearts never fail For the Bonnie ship the Diamond Goes a-fishing for the whale My soul has been torn from me and I am bleeding My heart has been wrent from me and I am crying All the beauty around me fades and I am screaming I am the last of the great whales and I am dying It'll be bricht both the day and night when the Greenland lads come home We'll have a ship that's full of oil, me lads, and money to our name We'll make the cradles all to rock and the blankets for to tear And every lass in Peterhead sing 'hushabye my dear' And it's cheer up, my lads Let your hearts never fail For the Bonnie ship the Diamond Goes a-fishing for the whale And it's cheer up, my lads Let your hearts never fail For the Bonnie ship the Diamond Goes a-fishing for the whale It's cheer up, my lads Let your hearts never fail For the Bonnie ship the Diamond Goes a-fishing for the whale
