Engeland had 13 kolonies die streden om onafhankelijkheid van Engeland. De 13 kolonies waren: New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina en Georgia. Ze verklaarden zich onafhankelijk in 1776 en vormden de Verenigde Staten van Amerika.
