Uncle Dave Macon heette in werkelijkheid David Harrisin Macon. Hij leefde van 1870 tot 1952. Hij was een Amerikaanse banjo player en zanger.

Lyle Lofgren once searched for the "big Macmillan" mentioned in this song. It turns out there was a boat that plied the Mississippi all during the Civil War as a supply boat. It was called the 'MOSES McLELLAN'. It is not hard to imagine that name changing to 'the big MacMillan'.
