Tom zegt over dit lied:
"This is the true story of the death by hanging of 25-year-old Scottish outlaw Jamie MacPherson in 1700. Jamie was born in 1675, the illegitimate son of a Highland laird and a beautiful gypsy girl. He became a man of great physical strength, an expert swordsman, as well as a renowned fiddler. But his career was robbery—his band led by a piper invading the markets. At his final armed robbery, a woman dropped a blanket or carpet over him from a window and he was disarmed and captured. In his final hours in prison, he composed the tune and song MacPherson’s Lament or MacPherson’s Rant, then played it under the gallows and offered his fiddle to anyone in his clan who would play it at his wake. When no one came forward, Jamie busted the fiddle. He was hung in Banff for being an armed gypsy thief. The song was later rewritten by Scottish poet Robert Burns. The busted fiddle lies in the MacPherson Clan Museum near Newtonmore."
Farewell, ye dungeons dark and strong Farewell, farewell to thee MacPherson's song will not be long Below the gallows tree "Say ron-ten-lee, say won-ten-lee Say don-ten-lee," played he He played a tune and he danced aroun' Below the gallows tree Untie these bands from off my hands And give to me my bow I've naught to leave my Scotland brave But a tune before I go "Say ron-ten-lee, say won-ten-lee Say don-ten-lee," played he He played a tune and he danced aroun' Below the gallows tree There's some come here to see me hanged And some to steal my fiddle But before that I do part with her I'll break her through the middle He took the fiddle into both his hands He broke it o'er his knee Sayin', "When I am gone no other hands Shall ever play on thee." "Say ron-ten-lee, say won-ten-lee Say don-ten-lee," played he He played a tune and he danced aroun' Below the gallows tree Oh, little did my mother know When she first cradled me That I would turn a rovin' boy And die on the gallows tree "Say ron-ten-lee, say won-ten-lee Say don-ten-lee," played he He played a tune and he danced aroun' Below the gallows tree "Say ron-ten-lee, say won-ten-lee Say don-ten-lee," played he He played a tune and he danced aroun' Below the gallows tree
