Geschreven door Tom Browne en Toni Smith. Tom Browne kreeg het idee in zijn geboorteplaats Queens te New York. Het werd z'n doorbraak en verscheen op het 2e album van de zanger: Love approach. Hij maakte nog enkele hits, maar kon dit succes niet meer herhalen. Funkin' for Jamaica (NY) werd meermaals gebruikt als sample door oa Mariah Carey, Snoop Dogg, N.W.A. en The Black Eyed Peas.
