Het lied heeft ook als titel: Martin Said To His Man.
Het is een zgn 'drinking song' uit de 16de eeuw. Iemand die dronken is heeft altijd heel wat te vertellen. Martin is de lord, de andere man is zijn bediende. De bediende drinkt uit een kopje, maar de lord uit de kan! Zeg maar de fles. Hij praat dronkenmans taal. De 'man in the moon' is koning Hendrik VIII. De man in St' Peters schoenen is de paus. In het vers de koning 'clout' = repareert/verbetert/terechtwijst de paus. Hetgeen natuurlijk onmogelijk is! Net zoals het in vers 4 onmogelijk is dat de kaas de rat opeet. Of de muis de kat opjaagt. Of de haas de jachthond. Maar ja..ben je dronken dan komen er heel wat sterke verhalen.
