the first part of the tab 5 5 5 8 5 3 1 0 is correct, but every second time it's 5 5 5 8 5 3 1 1h3 0

Getting this song 'correct' has baffled me... but try throwing your standard tuning concepts out the window and tune as follows...

Open A tuning ( E A E A C# E ) but with the top E dropped down to a low 'A'

Then pick up your slide (because yes... you play it with one...) Plunk out your bass rythm on the low A string as instructed, however let A chords in the bridge bit ring all low 5 strings open.
follow the I IV V pattern for 7 nations bliss.. When playing the slide (or fingered chords) omit the low A string, only add it in for a lower octave crunch...

You do not need a Bass player (but it'd give your buddy something to do...)

You do not need an 'octaver' (but it'd work)

just a 60+ guage string slapped in place of your standard 50~ish Bass E string and some practice with a slide.

i would like to say that the white stripes are one of the most talented bands of or musical generation. i have every album they have put out, and i have purchased all of their sheet music. this tab is very accurate, though the intro is off. there is no bass in the song, though there is nothing wrong with adding one while covering the song. more people need to be original. it never hurt to add a little jive to a song. i play guitar and sing for two bands, and we dont play many covers, but when we do, we usually add our own style to it. find your own style, dont be limited to what others have done. have fun with your instrument. if you dont, whats the point of playing? youll never get anywhere with a stick up your ass.

I tried on the harmonica... it doesn't sound right.

I say you did a good job on the tab. Nice work. And to the other people making such a large deal over the whole bass-no bass issue, why can you not just give it a rest? Like seriously, play the song, if you think the tab's good, and if you want to fight over the bass issue, talk to the band about it.

I am a newbie - I just got my guitar about three months ago and only have had time to start practicing about a week ago... does this song require an electric instrument (whether it be a bass or 6 string) because I would like to learn this song for my acoustic 6 string guitar... with the same tab scheme be used for an acoustic as with an electric? If so I my just figure it out myself but if its not possible I'd like someone to drop me a line if possible so I know where i stand. Later.

There's an easier way of playing it; I can't be bothered to write it all out but you start on the 2nd fret on the A string. There must be funny tuning so it doesn't sound right anyway.

Ill put this to rest once and for all. there is no bass in this song. When Jack plays this song in the video, you can clearly see he is playing the intro on a guitar. You can play the intro three ways:

1: Play with an octaver,
2: Play on a 7-string, tuned BEADGB from low to high, or
3: If you play this live, and your band has a bass player, and you dont have an octaver or a 7-string, (like me, cuz I cant afford that stuff right now) have the bass player do it.

No matter which way you play this, it will sound about the same, so make the decision yourself.

lots of bands who are missing some musicians (i.e. bassist) either hire a temp. one for the album, or, if the artist can, he plays the instrments himself, just laying over the tracks on the album. like creed. mark tremonti played bass on all the songs on their last album. he also played the extra guitars on lullaby. there are 3 in the song, if you didnt notice. it's not that hard to play extra instruments on the CD.

The man is right about the E-string being palm muted, makes it sound like a bass as long as the settings on the amp are clean. Also u dont really need to detune the E-string either.

Also it isnt a seven string that Jack uses its a bog standard six stringer :p. Tho a bass could be used to keep your Bass player happy (very tetchy are them bass players).

the only two instruentalists involved in production were jack and meg. to get the bass sound i have read everywhere jack used a octave pedal to make his guitar sound bass-y as for the piano on 'i wanna be the boy', that is jack. Jack has always written all the songs on the piano and then simply transcribed them so he can play them on the guitar, this i guess sounded better with piano. They are very good, message ends.

look closer to the video! he plays bass all through it and then switches to guitar in chorus and solo!
