Het lied gaat natuurlijk over Richard Leeuwenhart (1157 - 1199), vooral bekend door de 3de Kruistocht (1189 - 1192). Hij was de leider. Zijn tegenstander was Saladin, die aan de Mohammedanen leiding gaf. Het heilige land, Israel, was in de handen van de Mohammedanen en het was Richards taak het land van hen te bevrijden. Daarin slaagde hij niet.
