Het Russissche leger werd op 6 april 1915 aangevallen door de Duitsers. De Russen verbleven in het fort Osowiec (nu in Polen). De Duitsers besloten gebruik te maken van gifgas. Toen de Duitsers na de aanval het fort betraden was een deel van de Russen dood. Zij die in leven waren, zagen er verschrikkelijk uit. Zij hoesten bloed en kots. Hun huid was aangetast. Desondanks vochten ze met de Duitsers. Die sloegen op de vlucht. Zij waren vooral bang om wat ze zagen.
De kranten noemden deze strijd The Attack of the Death.
