Het lied beschrijft de geschiedenis van de opkomst van het Duitse Rijk dat leidde tot de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
In 1919 werd te Versailles het 'Verdrag van Versailles' getekend waarmee officieel een einde kwam aan de Eerste Wereldoorlog. In de samenstelling van de teksten werd er niet naar Duitsland geluisterd. Duitsland moest ondertekenen. Indien niet, dan zou het land volledig bezet worden. Duitsland tekende dus, maar de eisen waaraan Duitsland had te voldoen waren 'immoreel en niet uitvoerbaar.' Een Britse diplomaat zei: "Als ik Duitser was had ik nooit getekend." Vandaar de eerste zin van het lied.
En toen kwam Adolf Hitler. Een 'prisoner" zingt Sabaton. Jawel, in 1924 had Adolf Hitler een jaar vastgezeten in de gevangenis van Landsberg. Adolf had nl. in november 1923 samen met anderen een staatsgreep gepleegd, maar die was niet gelukt.
