Dit is het verhaal over Franz Stigler, een Duitse piloot Hij kreeg de opdracht een Amerikaanse B17 bommenwerper (piloot Charlie Brown) neer te halen. Maar toen hij dichter bij het Amerikaanse vliegtuig kwam, zag hoe hoe erg dit toestel beschadigd was. Hij besloot daarom het toestel weg te begeleiden uit de gevarenzone tot aan het Kanaal, zodat het toestel op eigen kracht naar Engeland kon vliegen. Dit was risikovol. Zijn eigen toestel kon neergeschoten worden door de B17 bommenwerper. Ook riskeerde hij zijn eigen leven door een opdracht niet uit te voeren. Hij kon daarvoor geexecuteerd worden.
Na de oorlog werden beide piloten vrienden. Franz emigreerde naar Canada en werd zakenman. Charlie vocht eerst nog in Laos en Vietnam en werd na zijn diensttijd uitvinder. Beiden stierven in 2008.
