Het lied is het verhaal van de wapenstilstand die spontaan ontstond tijdens de Kerst in 1914 rond Ieper en in Frans Vlaanderen.
"Op 24 december zetten de Duitsers op veel punten op de borstwering van de loopgraven van de eerste linie kerstbomen met kaarsjes neer. Geleidelijk aan klinken de kerstliederen aan beide kanten en worden over en weer kerstwensen uitgewisseld. Op sommige plekken verlaten de mannen hun loopgraven om hun doden uit het niemandsland te halen. Dergelijke evenementen herhalen zich op grotere schaal op eerste Kerstdag.
In sommige gevallen begraven beide partijen hun doden gelijktijdig. Soms wisselen de soldaten cadeautjes en adressen uit."
Op andere plaatsen aan het front werd er wel gewoon door gevochten.
