Juda was, zoals bekend, de vierde zoon van Jakob. In Genesis 49 vers 9 maakt Jakob de verwijzing naar de leeuw: Juda heeft zich als een leeuw neergelegd, wie zal hem durven opjagen? Om die reden is de leeuw het symbool van de stam van Juda geworden. In Openbaringen 5 vers 5 wordt ook over de leeuw gesproken: de leeuw uit de stam Juda. Maar nu wordt Jesus bedoeld. Vele Christelijke organisaties gebruiken het symbool van de Leeuw van Juda.
