In het refrein zingt Ray over de 'Ziegfeld Gal and the Vaudeville show'.
Ziegfeld is Florenz Ziegfeld. De man die, geïnspireerd door de Folies Bergères van Parijs, shows ontwierp op Broadway in New York. Hij noemde de shows de Ziegfeld Follies'. Het waren revues waaraan vele top artiesten meededen. Om er een paar te noemen: Josephine Baker, Bob Hope, Sophie Tucker en vele anderen.
De shows waren ook bekend door de Ziegfeld meisjes, die prachtige kostuums droegen en over het podium pareerden.
De eerste show was in 1907. De laatste in 1931.
Vaudeville is een theatervorm, dat een beetje lijkt op wat we in Nederland en België 'variété' noemen. Het werd eind 19e eeuw voor het eerst geïntroduceerd in New York. Het bestond uit verschillende, vaak komische, acts die na elkaar werden gespeeld. Bekende beoefenaars van vaudeville zijn Charlie Chaplin, The Three Stooges, Bobbejaan Schoepen en Donald O'Connor.
De herkomst van het woord vaudeville is onbekend.

Een verbastering van vaudevire. In de 15e eeuw ontstond in de Normandische stad Vire een traditie van satirische drinkliederen waarvan vooral de liederen van de dichter Olivier Basselin in heel Frankrijk populair werden. Ze stonden bekend als chansons de Vau de Vire ("liederen uit de Vire-vallei"), of kortweg vaudevire, wat uitgroeide tot een algemene benaming voor het satirische lied.
