Het is een Engels kerstlied dat rond 1780 voor het eerst gepubliceerd werd. De 12 dagen beginnen op 25 december en duren t/m 5 januari. De meeste kerken houden zich aan die 12 dagen waarin men de geboorte van Jezus Christus viert. Voor de Rooms Katholieken duurt de periode nog langer. In het jaar 567 werd deze periode officieel vastgesteld door de Council of Tours (de Kerkvergadering die in de Franse stad Tours werden gehouden).
Het lied is een zogenaamd cummulatief lied. Ieder couplet komt er iets bij. Er zijn heel wat variaties bekend. Kinderen vinden het geweldig om dit lied te zingen.
