Manitoba is een provincie centraal in Canada. De hoofdstad is Winnipeg. In het zuiden vind je landbouw, maar het grootste deel van de provincie is natuurgebied met heuvels, rotspartijen en uitgebreide grasvlakten die men 'prairies' noemt. Wij noemen ze toendra's.
De naam 'Manitoba' betekent 'Straits of Manitou, the Great Spirit. Het woord is afkomstig uit Indiaanse verhalen. De indianen, de oorspronkelijke bewoners, geloven dat Manitou rust in het grote meer dat in het midden van de provincie ligt: Lake Manitoba.
Manitou is de grote geest die in alle dingen aanwezig is: in de mens, de plant, de boom, in steen, in alles dus. Het is te vergelijkem met wat men in Japan 'Kami' noemt en in het Hindoeisme 'Brahman'.
