Het woord 'boondocks' is een Amerikaanse term waarmee een afgelegen plattelands gebied wordt bedoeld. Soms wordt de term ook gebruikt voor een afgelegen dorp of stadje dat niet ontwikkeld is.
De term is door de militairen die in de Filipijnen gelegerd waren geïntroduceerd. Boondock komt van het Filipijnse woord 'bundok' en betekent 'berg'. De bergen in de Filipijnen zijn schaars bewoonde en afgelegen gebieden.
