In de Noorse mythologie was Serkland 'het land van de Serkir'. Men spreekt ook wel van 'het land van de Saracenen'. Van oorsprong werd daarmee bedoeld het land ten zuiden van de Kaspische Zee. Langzamerhand veranderde dit en men duidde op een zeker moment daarmee alle Islamitische landen aan.
