Halvan the Black of in het Oud-Noors Halvan Svarti leefde van ca. 810 tot 860. Hij was de vader van Harald Fairhair, de eerste koning van Noorwegen. Het gebied waarover hij regeerde was rondom de huidige stad Oslo en heette Festfold. De naam betekent 'Het gebied ten westen van de fold. Fold is de oude naam van de Oslofjord. Hij breidde zijn gebied steeds verder uit. Overigens: Halvan regeerde samen met zijn broer over Festfold. Verder had Halvan ook grond aan de Noorse westkust. Dit alles ging gepaard met oorlogen, waarover heel wat verhalen bekend zijn.
