Cover van George S. Davis, zanger en tekstschrijver, die het lied uitbracht in 1946. Het gaat over een arbeider die in een kolen mijn werkt. George, alsmede zijn vader, heeft zelf in de mijnen gewerkt. George verklaarde dat hij de zinnen 'another day older and deeper in debt' en 'I owe my soul to the company store' zijn vader vaak hoorde zeggen. De betekenis is dat de mijnwerkers hun salaris niet in geld uitbetaald kregen, maar in tegoed bonnen. Deze bonnen konden uitsluitend in de winkel, eigendom van de company, gebruikt worden. Dit systeem heeft bestaan tot in het begin van de vorige eeuw.
