Get closer to the coast of the Pacific Ocean

Far from what I'm used to



My friends have traveled west  

Across the continent in search of a better life  

Just like Lewis and Clark at the request of Jefferson

 Obsessed with what they could find

And all the stories that we tell to move us forward  

We learned them when we are young  

So that life becomes a race where you can't look backwards  

Best to stare at yet to come



And our lives are on a course a manifest destiny

 To cover all the miles that we can

So we formed the modern ranks of discovery  

march out over the land

And we ripen like fruit sucking nutrients  

Wait for our stems to break  

So we can fall from the tree sweet with indifference

And sit there for someone to take  



So go ahead and pull the plug drain the country side  

Rob the small towns that bear you  

Pack 'em up and ship them out to someplace far away  

Tell them its the best they can do

Yes and I am moving soon  

To Minnesota and Indiana home

Tell my friends and family its nice to know you  

Its time to get out on my own



And I will move on from there in the name of progress

Reaching for the setting sun  

Will consume my every care I'll never stop and never rest

 Never say that I am done

Yes and I will make it out to Eugene Oregon

 And on to the pacific coast

And I will step to edge and touch the ocean  

 And that's as bout as far as you can go



 And I will have to turn around my back to the western sky

 Shriving wet and alone

And I will see my footsteps stretched back east ward

 Take a breath and follow them home
