George Bennard (1873 - 1958) was een Amerikaanse tekstschrijver en dominee, die vooral bekend geworden is door dit lied. Hij schreef het in 1912 tijdens een van zijn evangelische campagnes. Het lied is daarna door vele artiesten op de plaat gezet.

Maar wist je ook dat de Ku Klux Klan dit lied zingt tijdens de zogeheten 'cross burnings'?
'Cross burning', waarbij letterlijk een kruis wordt verbrand, is het symbool van het onvoorwaardelijk geloof van de leden van de Ku Klux Klan.
Overgens stamt het verbranden van kruisen uit Schotland, waar het werd gezien als een oorlogsverklaring.

Het volgende coouplet zingt Don niet:
