Valkyries worden in het Nederlands Walkuren genoemd. De Walkuren zijn strijdgodinnen in de Noordse mythologie. In feite is het woord strijdgodinnen fout. Zij vochten niet zelf. Na de strijd bezochten zij de slagvelden. De dappersten van de gesneuvelden namen zij mee en brachten die naar het Walhalla, een speciale hemel voor de gesneuvelden. De Vikingen noemden het de grootste eer voor een man om daar te komen. Het Walhalla is het rijk van Odin, de oppergod. Daar kregen ze eten en drinken en werd er goed voor hen gezorgd. En daar wachten ze totdat de eindstrijd, de Ragnorok, plaats vindt. Walkuren waren dus eigenlijk boodschapsters van Odin. Aanvankelijk werden zij als lelijke heksen afgebeeld, maar later veranderde dat in schone maagden.

Naast het Walhalla bestond er nog een tweede dodenrijk. De oppergod daar was Hel.
