War is een Motown hit die geschreven werd door Norman Whitfield en Barret Strong voor The Temptations maar uiteindelijk werd opgenomen door Edwin Starr. Deze krachtige song paste ideaal op de set list van Bruce Springsteen, die live hier en daar wel eens een cover tussen zijn over het algemeen zelf gecomponeerde repertoire. Springsteen wou het nummer in 1983 al brengen als protest tegen het beleid van Reagan in Centraal Amerika, maar vond het juiste arrangement niet. In 1984 lukte dat wel en nam hij het op in de set list van de Born in the U.S.A. Tour. Het nummer kwam ook op de verzamel box set terecht met live opnames Live/1975-85 en werd het een echte hit. De bijhorende videoclip was dan ook een opname van een live optreden. Springsteen hernam het nummer nog enkele jaren om dan opzij te leggen. In 2003 zong hij het opnieuw in de Rising Tour als protest tegen de oorlog in Irak. Dat jaar is Edwin Starr trouwens overleden op 61-jarige leeftijd.
