Het idee voor dit nummer ontstond toen Billy Joel net 40 jaar was geworden, en een 21-jarige vriend de opmerking maakte dat hij geluk had in de jaren vijftig geboren te zijn. Volgens hem was het een vreedzame periode waarin niets opmerkelijks gebeurde. Waarop Billy Joel verbaasd antwoordde of hij nog niet gehoord had over de Koreaanse oorlog en de Suezcrisis. Hieruit is later het nummer ontstaan, waarin de zanger alle politieke, culturele, sociale, wetenschappelijke en sportieve hoogtepunten opsomt vanaf zijn geboortejaar 1949 tot 1989.
