De Midgard serpent was een reusachtige zeeslang die stormen, ja, zelfs tsunami's veroorzaakte. Midgard was een van de 3 kinderen van Loki, de Noorse god van onheil en bedrog en de reuzin Angroba. De andere 2 kinderen waren Fenris de wolf en Hel.
De donder-god Thor haatte de Midgard Serpent. Hij wilde haar doden maar slaagde daar niet in. De slang verborg zich diep in de oceanen en wordt dus maar zelden gezien.
Het lot heeft bepaald dat als Ragnarok - het einde der wereld - komt Midgard pas vernietigd wordt.
