Frøya, in het Nederlands Freya, is de Noordse godin van de vruchtbaarheid, de liefde en de wellust. Ze is de godin van de engelen en, volgens de Germanen, de 'knapste' van alle goden.
Inderdaad wordt Freya gezien als mooi en machtig (zo'n vrouw wordt 'frova' genoemd). maar ze was ook een vechtersbaas.
Freya wordt beschouwd als de Noord-Europese tegenhangster van Venus en Aphrodite.
Naar haar is onze 'vrijdag' vernoemd.
