Geschreven door Michael McDonald (die eind jaren '70 de rol van leadzanger bij The Doobie Brothers overnam wegens gezondheidsproblemen van Tom Johnston) en Kenny Logins (Footloose) in 1978 voor het album Minute by minute. De groep won er 3 Grammy Awards mee. Het nummer viel zeker op in de Amerikaanse hitlijsten en was één van de weinige niet-disco nr 1- hits dat jaar. Michael Jackson beweerde dat hij de achtergrondzang op de dit nummer deed, maar kreeg hiervoor geen credit. Zowel Michael McDonald als Kenny Logins brachten het nummer zelf ook uit.
