Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog vond bij Gallipoli, een Turks schiereiland, een zware strijd plaats die bekend staat onder de naam Slag om Gallipoli of de Dardanellenveldtocht. De Britten en Fransen (de geallieerden) tegenover de Turken. Inzet was om de zeeroute naar Rusland, die via de Dardanellen liep, veilig te stellen. De geallieerden verloren. Er waren aan beide zijden grote verliezen.
Het lied is een eerbetoon aan de soldaten die er vochten en sneuvelden.
