De titel 82nd All The Way. Het 82ste regiment van het Amerikaanse leger was gedurende de WO1 in de bosrijke streek Argonne (Noord-Oost Frankrijk). Het regiment had de bijnaam 'All Americans'. De naam was gegeven omdat in dat regiment van alle staten van Amerika (dat waren er toen 48) tenminste 1 soldaat vertegenwoordigd was.
Het lied gaat over sergeant Alvin York. Hij en zijn mannen roeiden een Duits mitrailleur nest uit. Bij die aktie werden 132 Duitse soldaten gevangen genomen. Voor die daad werd hij beloond met de Medal Of Honor.
