'Zwaard van Damocles' wordt als een uitdrukking gebruikt. Het is een gevaar, dat iemand die voorspoedig of gelukkig is, bedreigt.

De uitdrukking is ontleend aan de geschiedenis van Damocles, een hoveling van Dionysius den Oudere, de tiran van Syracuse (405-367). Damocles was een vleier die tegen Dionysius zei hoe jaloers iedereen wel op hem was. Hij was uiteraard zelf jaloers op de weelde van Dionysus. Op zekere dag liet Dionysius hem aan zijn tafel eten. Damocles genoot tot het moment dat hij bemerkte dat boven zijn hoofd aan een paardenhaar een scherp, blinkend zwaard hing als zinnebeeld van het gevaar dat de gelukkige of machtige voortdurend bedreigt.
