General Taylor is Generaal Zachary Taylor, algemeen generaal van de Amerikaanse strijdmacht, maar ook de 12de president van de VS (1849-1850). Het lied gaat over zijn gevecht tegen Antonio López de Santa Anna in de Battle of Buena Vista. Dat was in 1847. Het was een gevecht in de oorlog tussen Mexico en de VS (1846-1848).
Het lied suggereert dat generaal Taylor een heldendood stierf tijdens het gevecht, maar dat is niet waar. Hij stierf in 1850 aan een ziekte.
