Een 'wren' is een winterkoninkje, een vogel dus. En 'cutty' betekent hier kleine.

Het is een Engelse Folk song. De schrijver is onbekend. Het lied kent allerlei variaties. Een min of meer bekende variatie is "The Hunting of the Wren". Het was (of is?) een traditie om in de nacht van 26 december (= St Stephens Day) in Ierland een optocht te organiseren waarbij men gekleed gaat in bizarre kostuums. Men droeg aan takken dode winterkoninkjes mee. Op het Isle of Man gebeurde dit op Kerstochtend. Men zong daarbij: "The wren, the wren, the kin of all birds. On St Stephens day was caught in the furze. Although he was little, his power was great. So up with the kettle and down with the plate."

Deze traditie kwam ook in Frankrijk voor.
