Het is van origine een Iers lied. De tekst wordt toegeschreven aan Dallán Forgaill en is uit de 6de (!) eeuw. De tekst was in het Oud-Iers geschreven en door Mary Elizabeth Byrne in 1905 vertaald in het Engels. Later volgden meerdere vertalingen.
