Het lied is ook bekend onder de titel 'Beautiful Savior'. Het is een zeer oud lied. We weten niet door wie en wanneer het geschreven is. De muziek is een oud volkslied uit Silezië, een streek in midden-Europa waarvan het grootste deel in Polen ligt.
Er wordt gezegd dat Duitse Kruisvaarders dit lied zongen toen ze op weg waren om het Heilige land te bevrijden. Dat was in de tijd van de Kruistochten.

Joseph A. Seiss heeft het lied in 1873 in het Engels vertaald.
