About this Album:
Rolling Papers is the third studio album by rapper Wiz Khalifa, released on March 29, 2011 by Atlantic Records & Rostrum Records, making it his first release on a major label.
Wiz Khalifa was recently named MTV U.S’s Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010, beating acts such as Nicki Minaj and J Cole.
The production on this album is very good. The instrumentals alone would be worthy of a purchase. Wiz’s delivery on every track is magic and the hooks mesh perfectly with the melodies. This album shows a lot of his talent. There are hardcore songs, strong lyric songs, and soft, country like songs.
This is his 1st main stream album he is trying to appeal to the masses, it is a must for hip-hop fans, definitely worth buying.
Black and Yellow became Khalifa’s first and most popular single off the album upon its release on September 14, 2010. It became one of the most popular and highest selling Hip-Hop songs of 2010, obtaining massive radio air-play and eventually attaining sales of 2,342,000. Claiming to have written it in honor of his hometown city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s sporting team’s colors, the song became the un-official anthem of the Pittsburgh Steelers. The song is also notably popular for being remixed numerous times by fellow rappers, including Lil Wayne, Tyga, Slim Thug, Young Jeezy, Wale, Donnis, Game, SoLouCity YG, Kendrick Lamar, Jim Jones,Fabolous, J-Syn and Maino. The official remix entitled,
“Black and Yellow (G-Mix)” would later be released in February, and feature Snoop Dogg, Juicy J and T-Pain.
“Roll Up” became the second official single off the album, after being released on February 3, 2011. The single is once again produced by Stargate. “On My Level”, released on iTunes on February 22, 2011, became the first promotional single off the album. The song features vocals from Too $hort, and is produced by Jim Jonsin.
“The Race“, the second promotional single off the album was officially released March 8, 2011 via iTunes. The song was produced by I.D. Labs formerly by duo Eric “E.” Dan and Big Jerm.
“No Sleep” is the album’s third single, released March 23, 2011 in iTunes.
“Rolling Papers” is not on par with Wiz Khalifa mixtapes, but it is still one of the best mainstream hip-hop albums of the past 5 years. The album is very well-produce, and although the content does not contain much variety, the lyrics are well-delivered and well-written. Wiz Khalifa has a great flow.
Steve Jones of USA Today complimented his “laid-back flow and knack for catchy rhymes over melodic beats”, but viewed that “he is limited thematically”.
According to Wiz, there are three different meanings behind the Rolling Papers title.
