The song was composed by the Peruvian composer Daniel Alomia Robles and based on a traditional Andean tune.
The melody was taken up as "Paso del condor" by the group Urubamba alias The Incas.
Paul Simon from the group Simon & Garfunkel heard it in Paris from the leader of the group, Jorge Milchberg. Simon composed new lyrics to it and included the song as "El condor pasa" on the album "Bridge over Troubled Water" (1970).
This version, in turn, was taken up by other singers, both in English, e.g. Perry Como and in other languages - as this version by Marie Laforêt in a free translation into French.
