About this Album:
Less popular in European countries, Josh Groban is massive in the USA. His first four solo albums have been certified multi-platinum, his Christmas album Noël was the best-selling album of 2007 and he is the number-one best-selling classical artist of the21st century in the US, according to Nielsen SoundScan. His sixth studio album, All That Echoes, was released on February 5th, just in time for Valentine's Day and has received positive reviews.
There are harps, horns, violins, strings, cellos and more sophisticated instruments that can be perceived by an educated ear, but we have to admit that the album has been mastered carefully. Groban mingled pop with a tamed version of orchestral music, so that his songs wouldn't sound too bombastic or proud, but casual and mainstream-friendly.
"Brave" is one of the best songs on the album, as it has everything a fan would expect from Groban: energetic strings, a great chorus and ennobling lyrics about finding your inner strength in fighting the challenges life sometimes brings along, about finding your reason to be courageous and not hit the road when things are tougher. "I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)" is by far, one of the greatest songs of this album, as it has all the best features of a Groban song, plus that emotional finish that always seduces the gals. It's a simple and yet very profound song about the need of falling in love for life, about not being afraid in a relationship and about having that emotional comfort and security that all women want from their spouses.
"False Alarms" is softer, "Falling Slowly" is a less appealing cover of the Academy-Award winning song from the film 'Once', and "Happy In My Heartache" sounds more like a lingering song with very sad lyrics. "Wicked winds are blowing through the halls/ These old familiar faces are clinging to the walls/ I know it's cold but I can't feel at all," he sings with a lower, softer voice.
As for the rest of the tracks, Groban seemed to have wanted to reach an audience that is not American and has included on the album a few songs in Italian and Spanish. "E Ti Promettero" is his first traditional foreign-language song and is quite beautiful once you get to understand the lyrics. "Un Alma Mas" is not the best song he has ever sand so far, but it's not bad either as it has that Spanish passion in it.
Therefore, Josh Groban's All That Echoes is an inspiring and exciting album that bursts with the singer's powerful vocals. Including only intimate verses and big, passionate choruses, the songs form an interesting collection of heart-swelling ballads and tenor showpieces that stormed the US charts by taking the top position. With this album, Groban proved to his fans and to himself that it's possible to be successful by making good music, without sacrificing his artistic integrity.
