1.	Think of someone who in the past did an excellent job of motivating you. Describe how this was done. Which of the following approaches did that person use?

It is my father who motivated me most.  He may not be a wealthy and well-known man but what he have are more than all the riches in the world put together.  He is one of those who suffered the bitterness of poverty and the absence of a father but his goal to fulfill his dreams motivated him to do the best he can.  He was able to go to school and to establish his own business without relying to others.  He is also able to give all our needs.  He always tell us that if your goals are set and you are really determined then there?s nothing to worry, everything will go the way you want them to be.  When things get tough and I feel like giving up I just tell myself that what I?m suffering is nothing compared to what he had experienced.

2.	In your role as a student, do you feel that you are motivated more by Maslow?s lower?order or higher?order needs? Explain. Describe how you expect motivation to change once you graduate.

As of now I am more motivated by Maslow?s lower order needs.  Being a student my attention is focused on studying and in fulfilling my obligations.  If my basic needs are fulfilled and I feel secured I can do my obligations to the most effective and efficient manner.  Maybe after graduation I will be motivated more by the higher order needs ? belonging and love needs, esteem needs and self-actualization needs.  Leaving the portals of the school will mark the beginning of another period of my life wherein I have to face the real world.  I will meet new people of different characters.  My needs to belong and be loved by these people will become more intense.  Fulfillment of these needs will contribute much to my self-esteem.  Also by that time I have to prove to myself that the hardships I endure during my studies will not be wasted.  That I can be someone who I want to be.

3.	Which factor in Herzberg two-factor model is most motivating to you at present? Is this a maintenance or motivational factor?

Motivational factor is more motivating to me because for me having a job means opening doors for self-fulfillment which can only be attained if I?m satisfied with what I?m doing.  I find it more challenging to work in an environment that offers opportunities for personal growth and advancement. I want to have responsibilities that are equal to my capability and that I can prove that all my hardships are worthy with the kind of job I have.

4.	Indicate the major similarities and differences between the Maslow, Herzberg and Alderfer models and relate the four major drives to those models.

Maslow?s Hierarchy of Needs and Alderfer?s ERG Theory compared.

		One of the similarities of these two theories is that both are hierarchical.  Another is that the needs mentioned by Maslow are the same to those of Alderfer.  Alderfer existence needs which are all types of material and psychological needs are the same to that of Maslow?s physiological and safety needs, relatedness needs that means to have good relations with other people are also included in Malow?s social or love needs and self-esteem needs. Lastly the growth needs are the same to Maslow?s highest order need which is the self-actualization needs.
		In addition to the reduction of  number of levels, the ERG theory also differs from Maslow?s Hierarchy of needs in three ways.  First, unlike in Maslow?s hierarchy, ERG theory allows for the needs to be pursued simultaneously.  It also allows the order of needs to be different for different people.  ERG theory also acknowledges that if the higher order needs remained unfulfilled, the individual can regress to the lower order needs which are easier to satisfy.

Herzberg?s Motivation-  Hygiene Theory compared to Maslow?s Hierarchy of Needs and Alderfer?s ERG Theory

	All three acknowledges the importance of the satisfaction of one?s needs but unlike Maslow and Alderfer, Herzberg said that there are only two distinct human needs portrayed.  These are the physiological and psychological needs.  According to him, physiological needs can be fulfilled by money while psychological needs are satisfied by activities that give opportunities for growth. He made use of a two-factor model ? motivation and maintenance or hygiene factors to satisfy the mentioned distinct needs.  He considered company policy, supervision, relationship with boss, work condition, salary and relationship with peers as hygiene factors.  According to him these are dissatisfiers because though they are factors necessary to avoid dissatisfaction, they don?t contribute to the one?s satisfaction.  Herzberg included achievement, recognition, work itself, responsibility, advancement and growth under the motivation factors.  It is important that these factors are present to ensure the satisfaction of an individual.

The above mentioned theories focused mainly on the satisfaction of an individual?s needs which will motivate him in performing his tacks.  As we all know motivation is one of the principal determinants of human behavior. It stems from the following natural drives that people experience.
1. Achievement/success
2. Power/impact
3. Affiliation/intimacy
4. Avoidance/safety
