Let me tell you about this song so that you don't think Hank had a habit of bad-mouthing preachers. He wrote this song to chastise the radio preachers who didn't practice what they preached. Much like the present day TV and Radio preachers who say, "Send your money to Jesus, but put our names on the checks!" After Hank had sung this song on radio a few times in the mid 40's, the preachers that he was targeting sent him $22.00 and asked him not to sing it anymore. This is the only time Hank was ever paid to not sing! Hank gave the song to a young "Cowboy Jack" Loftin and told him to see if he could make $22.00 with it. Jack finally recorded it in the mid 90's. I had the pleasure of playing this song with Jack in a few jam sessions.
