Artic monkeys are a four-piece Indies rock/post-punk revival band from High Green Sheffield. There first two singles, I Bet You Look Good on the Dance floor and When the Sun Goes Down, were there first big hit they both went straight to number one in the UK Singles Charts. The band started in 2002 with Alex Turner the lead singer playing on guitar, Jamie cook on guitar, Matt Helders on drums and as backing singer and Nick OMalley on bass guitar.

The cover of the album Whatever people say I am that's what Im not is a picture of a friend of the band Chris McClure. Chris and a couple of his close mates were asked if they could help the band out and let them take a couple of pictures for thirty pounds but before the pictures were taken Chris and his mates were given free alcohol and free cigarettes. The picture used for the cover of the album brought up an issue from the NHS about the picture on the cover gives the idea that smoking is cool and okay. The bands product manger denied accusations of this and said that this shows that smoking is not doing him any good.

Unlike any usual bands the Artic Monkeys were advertised purely by the internet by fans sending demo tapes, as the file sharing grew so did the Artic Monkeys popularity, people were singing along to the tunes of Artic Monkeys even though they hadn't as yet officially released a song. It didn't take long to get record companies to start asking about them they soon signed up to the major record company Domino records leading to them releasing there debut album Whatever people say I am that's what Im not!? on the 23rd January 2006. This went straight to number one and broke all of the records for the largest first week sales of a debut album in UK history selling 120,000 copies. The band also won several music prizes which include the Best new act, best new band and also the Best British band. It was later released in the United States on the 21st February 2006. It then went on to be the number one in Australia.

Sometimes a band is hyped out off all proportion and 90 percent of the time they fall flat on their face...but if this debut album is anything to go by! Long live the artic monkeys.......The first time you hear the intro on track2 look good on the dancefloor i bet you will be hooked. Most of the songs have been influenced by nights out in their local sheffield pubs and clubs but clever rhymes and catchy bass lines and it turns to magic stuff. Mardy Bum is my favourite track but also like Fake Tales and Red lights....And the last track youll hear a one minute of mindblowing of inspired drumming...Great stuff!If Alex Turner can reproduce this kinda song writing to the 2nd album another masterpiece is in waiting!Rating 10/10
