John Lennon heeft dit lied alleen geschreven, maar het opgedragen aan het partnership Lennon/McCartney. Dat is overigens met meerdere songs gebeurd.
John kreeg de inspiratie tot het schrijven van dit lied door een jeugdherinnering. Als kind speelde hij soms met vriendjes in de tuin van het kindertehuis van het Leger des Heils ('Salvation Army Children's Home'). Dat kindertehuis heette 'Strawberry Field'.

Het zinnetje 'nothing to get hung about' in het refrein is een verwijzing naar wat zijn tante Mimi Smith, zei. Zijn tante verbood hem namelijk in die tuin te spelen. Maar John reageerde: "They can't hang you for it"

John schreef het lied in Spanje. In die tijd gebruikte hij drugs, o.a. cannabis. Het eerste zinnetje van het tweede couplet 'No one I think is in my tree, I mean it must be high or low' klinkt onbegrijpelijk. In een later interview heeft John verteld wat hij met deze zin bedoelde. Door zijn drugsgebruik vond hij dat 'nobody is as hip as me' (no one is in my tree) en 'therefore I must be crazy or a genius' (I mean it must be high or low).
John noemt het lied een psycho-analyse op muziek gezet.

Strawberry Fields Forever wordt algemeen als een klassieker beschouwd.
